The problem is the high hospitalization rate (good luck figuring out an accurate number but it's seemingly over 10X the regular flu). A large portion of these will require ventilators as well, which are a bottleneck in treatment. What's happened in Italy is that they've run out of ventilators to treat people and are resorting to WW2 style triage where if you're old or have other health complications you're essentially left to die.

My local hospital has 1 ventilator for a population of 8.5k (mostly a retirement community so old and at risk). Usually we would transport patients to other hospitals if they needed assisted breathing but we just found out that won't be an option. The hospital just decided that they would use a nearby building they've recently acquired as an 'overflow' area for people who test positive. It's basically going to be a place where people are sent to die.

Not going to say where in America I am. Had to go to the hospital recently with breathing issues, Dr. said our area probably got it already and if my breathing worsens to call her in a week. This was at the end of 2-3 weeks of a bad flu-like experience. I'm young enough that my probability of dying was low so the Doc said even if I had symptoms they wouldn't test me. She said the number of people infected was much larger than the numbers posted because of the lack of testing devices and red tape. I'm guessing the U.S. is much worse off than people realize and when hospital beds are full we will see some shit. Assuming people don't stay at home.
