I recognize my own responsibility in this continuum, that I must carry the torch, never let it fall, never let the flames flicker and die, but tend them and kindle them higher and brighter and warmer. I am thankful for the light that guides me in the darkness, I am thankful for the flame that warms me in the wilderness, and I will see that torch in the hands of my own children. They will understand what it took for that flame to pass to them and they will look with the same reverence and respect to the past, and the same clear-eyed optimism toward the future.
