My wife's dog was annoying and would bite our child, so I kicked it in the stomach as hard as I could 2 years ago, and watched it die slowly over the course of a week, bleeding from its mouth and anus. While it was dying my wife closed herself off in our bedroom with it, and held it for hours until she needed the toilet or to grab a bite, asking me to watch the dog and make sure it was okay. Whenever she left I would go back there and kick the dog in the head or punch it mercilessly, because that's what you do with a bad dog, beat it into submission and let it know if you hate it. You can scream LARP and post your emotional outbursts in response all you want, won't change the past, or my future actions towards anything that hurt my children. Fuck that dog.

Every cat's different. Some are more stand-offish. In my experience, most cats are extremely friendly if treated well from kittens. But if they had a mediocre upbringing, they'll be more stand-offish. Just like humans.

It's all about the breed. Generic cats are all stand-offish to an extent while weird breeds like ragdoll pretty much don't care what you do with them.
A cat can purr a lot and sit on your chest at night but it still wont like being held in a hug. That said they can be alright being carried in the proper position which sort of qualifies as a hug as long as you don't carry them too long. Being able to have their paws press against something so that they can jump away if they feel the need gives them a greater feeling of security.
