The British government’s strategy to deal with the coronavirus outbreak is for 60% of the UK to become infected in order to develop “herd immunity” against the disease, according to The Independent.
In other words, when the thus-far unstoppable virus ravages England, it was all part of the plan.
“We think this virus is likely to be one that comes back year on year and becomes like a seasonal virus and communities will become immune to it and that’s going to be an important part of controlling this in the longer term,” said the government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, who added “60% is the sort of figure you need to get herd immunity.“
According to Vallance, isolating the population would only temporarily suppress the virus, but it would quickly re-emerge and the crisis would be repeated.
“If you completely locked down absolutely everything probably for a period of four months or more then you would suppress this virus,” he said, adding “All of the evidence from previous epidemics suggests that when you do that and then you release it, it all comes back again.“
Vallance’s comments echo those made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier in the week, when he said the UK might have to just “take it on the chin.”

It's a solid idea. Kids get very mild symptoms and can develop antibodies. So the best bet is to get them through herd immunity first. Then they can take the virus home to their relatively young parents. Who will develop the same. In the ideal scenario a minority of people will get seriously ill and under the threshold of our 4000 critical care beds. By isolating the elderly for approximately 4 months. We can disperse the virus amongst those who can take it across the population, and gradually bring out the elderly (if we haven't got a vaccine by then) - with the ability to care for them without having to sacrifice them for the young (which is what Italy is faced with currently). The lockdowns work if you did it early. But with 10,000 people walking around Britain with suspected coronavirus, it's too late. The brightest scientific and medical minds in Britain came up with this plan, and Boris surrendered all of the planning to them to do so, and is choosing to run with it. I'd rather Britain gave it a pop. The Italian model isn't working, the Spanish model isn't working. We don't have the autocracy to try the Chinese model. If the British model works as intended - it will be studied for pandemics for decades.

If you read up on cutting edge epidemiological practices this is actually the correct approach for this virus. It was actually the CDC who first proposed this strategy to a pandemic, 10 years ago. But trump is now ignoring their advice.
Watch china. They imposed strict quarentine measures, and it works BUT, watch what happens when they lift the quarentine measures. They will have a massive surge in new cases. The alternative is to impose quarantine and isolation measures for an insane amount of time (5 months or more), which isn't viable.
What you are seeing in other countries is tantamount to populism. Its government who want to be seen to be doing something, so they are doing things way too soon, and it will be counter productive in the long run.

The question is at what age does this virus get truly dangerous (say +1% needing hospitalization). If it’s generally +50 it’s probably doable. If it’s more like +30 probably not.
