There is actually some chimerical artificially created virus that is generally pretty big and has been floating around since at least this larp was posted. The economic crash is, however, separate from the virus and is convenient to avoid admitting the economy is failing. You see shale oil is one big sham, all of it. The reports vs reality is basically the tipping point that is bringing the entire US economy down from bad investments. Popping every bubble in one big spiral. Every country is doing a lockdown because of a domino effect and, even if the virus turns out to be a nothingburger, the economy isn't. The moment China stopped the supply chain in one of it's biggest ports was the moment everything was coming down. Sure you got Italy being a guinea pig to see if WHO could go China on a country's asshole; but complete shut down of not only travel but even trade means every country dependent on goods from another country now has to shutdown now too, or crash from supply shortages later.

To be fair looking at Italy and the 7% morbidity rate and 20-30% hospitalization rate I think it's probably good that we're being cautious/panicky. I was getting pretty annoyed with the lack of response by late February considering we were beginning to see triple digit numbers in the states. There's still a lot we don't know about the virus (reinfection rate, propensity to mutate) so an abundance of caution is necessary.

Is that in Italy? They've begun to preferentially treat younger patients over older ones for survivability is my main guess for why that is and it makes sense. Additionally, as it spreads the people who are going to actually be viable for medical treatment will continually be made up of people who can actually survive it in the first place.
South Korea has done a lot more tests and mainly reflects a younger 20-40 year old population and their case fatality rate is something like .02% at the moment. I have no reason to think a healthy young person in a developed country would react any more strongly. The age of death in Italy remains virtually the same.
