I was reading an article a day or so ago about the likely number of ventilators being around 160k total, many obviously already being occupied by non-Covid-19 patients in ICU. What was fucked was they conservatively estimated about 760k would need to be ventilated from this — granted, not all at once. Still, scary stuff.

I imagine we’ll start seeing mass quarantine in major cities by the end of the month. I.e., you need a pass saying you can leave your home or you’ll get arrested. This will be enforced by national guard and police. If it gets worse, they might simply not allow any exiting and replace it with ration distribution. In the suburbs and countryside they’ll probably order all non essential businesses closed; the country is simply too dispersed to enforce quarantine. Maybe a “no cars on road” policy and you’ll get pulled over. I imagine hospitals will be over capacity in a week if not already.

By July, I imagine enough people will have had enough exposure that curfews will be lifted for least vulnerables to resume daily necessities. The power and water won’t stop flowing or else mass lawlessness will result.

This is really what it comes down to. Airborne AIDS or just a flu bro? We’ve been arguing over this central question since the start.

I’ve been following this thing since the earliest reports from Wuhan. I’ve looked at every research report, read every medical study I could get my hands on. I’m not some moronic happeningfag that wants the world to end. I have a great life, a bright future ahead of me, and I’m scared of losing those I love. In the last few months I’ve felt the fragility of all of this. I got my first academic teaching job this semester and now school is canceled indefinitely.

In all sober honesty the reports do not look good. I wish I could
say just a bad a flu, but the data and firsthand accounts point to a darker truth. It’s the stories you read about young people catching it and being destroyed by it; the insane communicability of the virus which all but guarantees its spread; and our lack of knowledge about the disease’s long term effects and possible flare-ups.

China may have wrestled it under control with draconian measures for the time being, but anyone with a brain knows it isn’t truly solved there or anywhere. What happens when it mutates? What happens when “recovered” patients flare up again or become reinfected? What happens when people leave quarantine and are reexposed?

There doesn’t seem to be much hope for America. I believe it’s going to be bad for the next six months. Whether things stabilize after that, or continue to get worse until everything really collapses, well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

But one thing is for sure, the country will never be the same after this. COVID19 is a happening on the scale of WW2. It’s a once in a lifetime historic event. It will profoundly shape the future of our planet. Just how much will be left after it runs its course, is yet to be determined.
