Kurds in Iraq are split in two groups.
KDP(Barzanis) control: Erbil and Duhok. They are Kermanji Kurds, similar to Turkish and Syrian Kurds. PUK(Talabani) control: Sulaimaniya, Halabja and Kirkuk. They are Sorani Kurds and they are similar to Iranian Kurds.
The KDP is aligned with Turkey to counter PUK who is aligned with Iran.
The KDP will never cut their ties with Turkey. They love Turkey so much and Turkey helps them a lot.
The KDP are working with Turkey to fight the PKK in KRG-Iraq. Funy, Iraqi Kermanji Kurds working with Turkey to fight Turkish Kermanji Kurds.
The PUK are working with PKK and Iran to counter the KDP, and to get control over the border crossing between KRG and Syria(Kurdistan of Syria).
But overall we Kurdoids somehow manage to make it work. At end of day, all the Syrian Kurds(YPG), the Turkish Kurds(PKK) and Iraqi Kurds(PUK and KDP) all get together and work something out.
If a conflict ignites, I find it very hard to imagine the Kurds being dragged into the conflict and cause them to split. Speciall the KRG in Iraq is working strong with the KRG in Syria.
