People were asking about guns in earlier threads. Here's the straight dope.

If you bug-in, they make an ideal home defense rifle. At close range just point and shoot.
If you bug-out, they can be used for hunting easily. It's not ideal for hunting, but ammo doesn't take much space and it'll still kill anything up to and including a deer without much trouble. You may have to follow a blood trail for a little while for larger game if your accuracy sucks.
Even if ammo is running low in stores (I don't know if that's the case, may be), there's enough in American hands to kill the entire planet several times over, so you'll never run out in a true collapse.

Shitty AR-15s basically don't exist anymore. Competition has been fierce for years and the AR-15 has become both cheap and good, although if you want a really accurate gun for competition or long-range shooting, paying more does generally get you nicer more accurate barrels and nicer features like rail systems for attachments.
Get any one you can, but...
Ideally get a 16" barrel with a mid-length (~9") gas system. This is the most versatile configuration, and will give you plenty of reliability without being too unwieldy in whatever situation you find yourself in.
Don't worry about barrel twist rate. 1:7, 1:8, or 1:9 is all fine. If you're getting gun advice from Yas Forums in the middle of Wuhan panic buying, you probably don't know enough to know why you'd want something specific anyway.

If you want. You can get an 80% lower and all the other parts you need online without even going to a gun store for a background check. But you will have to spend a bunch of time removing material from the 80% lower and putting shit together, which takes tools and know-how. It can be a fun project, but for your first gun maybe not the best choice.
