It wasn't imperialism, it was just plain communist takeover.
With Imperialism, the king moves into some unclaimed dump, plops down a fort, and lets some missionaries come in and establish schools and hospitals. And maybe you sell them some guns in exchange for tea or whatever.
With communism, you kill everyone who disagrees with you, brainwash them into hating God and their culture, and then subject them to nightmarish conditions and police state control until their economy collapses and they break free.
