My history professor in college who is also a devote catholic actually looked in to this question for the class. What's interesting is that he didn't actually find much as to why suicide was a sin or if you even went to hell for it. What he did find however, were priests and the like condemning suicide and telling people that it's a ticket to hell. Basically the idea that suicide is bad or that you go to hell for it is all made up to scare people from going through with it.
