The office of US President is a figurehead. Neither of the two major parties gets all that much return on investment by winning any one given election for President. Both are already guaranteed a win roughly every one to two election seasons when swing voters get annoyed with the last victor's party and start voting for the other party instead.
Also the panic here isn't anything newly invented or discovered. FDR had that "only thing to fear is fear itself" line about the Great Depression for the same situation in terms of people getting caught in a feedback loop of panicking over economic conditions worsened by panic.
