I'll never understand the mind of a professional sports fan. In my opinion they are mostly just scared of being 'the guy that doesn't do x'. x in this case being watching sports. It's peer pressure taken to a ridiculous level. They can't actually enjoy it, the typical boomer sports fan has probably sat through at least a year's worth of commercials over the course of their life. It's an unimaginable waste of time. The actual sports are hardly better. The majority of it is completely dull.

So why do they do it. How do they sit there night after night and convince themselves that they are being entertained? The alcohol must help. What a depressing waste of human life.

This, sports lose their intended purpose when they do this. You have nothing in common with the players, you don't know them, they couldn't care less about you, they would change sides for more money. There is no reason for you to care who wins. Localization would definitely bring some of the meaning back, but with the population what it is, it would hardly make a difference.
