I used to give all the time, but now almost all of the beggars are young guys that seem perfectly healthy. Get a job, there's always work for someone like that. These days there is so much charity and government programs that only junkies or scammers end up begging.

Maybe once a year if that. I don't typically ever do it. But every once in awhile I see some old guy or something, and it's the middle of winter in Colorado, and it's cold as shit, and he's visibly shivering, and he's dirty as hell, and I can tell he's actually REALLY homeless not some panhandler doing it for 20 bucks an hour, then yea I'll give him whatever money I have in my wallet. I don't usually have more than 10-20 bucks. They never say anything to me which is how I know I made a good choice. If you make a bad choice they say " God bless " or " Thank you so much " but the last guy I gave money to barely was able to take it and didn't even look at me. He was freezing to death.

When I go into the city, I fill up my backpack with juice boxes and granola bars. I had those out instead of money. This summer, I had a mom of five ask me for cash - I offered her and her kids granola bars. She said “nah - don’t want those” as she dragged her kids off - will them still holding their hands out to me.

I believe that giving homeless people money is form of encouragement to their downfall. There are a few bums that I do know that are nice and occasionally give them a dollar but never for the rest.

It's literally easier than that. No handshake or smile required. Just go to a staffing agency and they will give you a job. It's not going to be a cushy office job, but usually it's not that bad. I've gotten tons of jobs this way and my fellow temps were not impressive in any way. Burnouts, foreigners that didn't speak english, more burnouts. I doubt you even need a resume.
