You’re judging both events as if they’re concluded, we are still well within the throes of this crisis and it is going to get much, much worse. You are right, the total meltdown of the global financial system was thwarted by government intervention, but that is only because the damage was caused and contained by the financial system itself. This, on the other hand, is a real world problem. In 2008 banks were the first to go because the problems were created and held by banks, this time around banks will be the last to go. Businesses will see traffic come to a halt, our economy is propped up on the consumer and that consumer is going to disappear for a while. Those businesses won’t be able to make deposits and, more importantly, make their payments, and banks will see default and deferment rates skyrocket down the road. The biggest differences between this event and 2008 are
1. Central banks have less ammunition this time around as they’ve been unprecedentedly active in the economy and stretched thin for 10 years, rates can’t go much lower and balance sheets are already at all time highs
2. Money alone won’t solve this problem, the government cannot step in and simulate our entire economy; note I said simulate and not stimulate. Soon we’re going to have little to no commerce, businesses will not be able to pay their employees, and liquidity will be non existent.
I hope I’m wrong, but this is the stage that has been set.
