The global peace index doesn't only look at violence. It gives negative marks for things that create potential for violence. Free speech and the right to bear arms can be negatives. Add to that being a major nuclear power with worldwide military bases (something that has led to less war than the word traditionally has had) and our high rate of incarceration (gpi looks at perceived crime and prison population instead of victimization rates) and there's no way the states will ever be at the top.

It is a bullshit ranking. While the USA shouldn't be at the top of the list for peaceful nations this list isn't based completely on factors that really measure peace.
