this is a pretty good indication how they'll be treated; opsec is one of the most important aspects of prepping for the worst, be it a natural disaster or chinese designer kung flu virus. If they're competent or lucky they'll have some measure of security and might be able to take out some random shitters trying to break in, but unless people learn to stay clear a concerted effort by suitably desperate people could lead to some stolen things. What good are stacks of food are going to do for you in the event you have to vacate your domicile completely? Perhaps you can grab a pick up truck's worth of beans to last you a week on the run. Or are you hunkered down for the long term? Can you go out and scavange? Who is the hostile? Is it people? Is it a virus? Weapon and a week's worth of food is nice. Everything else is overkill.
