And yet in every tv show and movie and media, the american suburb lifestyle is seen as the peak of quality and happiness. You don't see no cartoon with Laquisha living with their 7 cousins in a shared rented apartment in Brooklyn and people wishing they could be Laquisha.

City management is better than it has ever been before in recorded history -- more fascist than anything else.

That said: it's 100 years behind material science and engineering science limited by the antiquated building code.

Everything you hate about what looks awful about urban sprawl is due to the communistic aspects of building codes.

Long Island has some of the first suburbs in the country. As such, it was kind of a testing ground for what works and what doesn't. Suburbs built decades later are much better designed and usually have a tree like structure so that the homes are at the end of the smallest branches, the stores are along the main branches, and the trunk is the highway that leads into the nearby city.

That is actually very efficient use of the space, relative to the requirements of the users.

Each individual family / household wants:

1. A private residence
2. Open space / lawn / garden around that residence
3. One or more automobiles
4. Limited thru traffic passing by the residence

If you structure your land use to maximize the number of residents who get #1 to #4, you end up with pic related. You may think people shouldn't want #1 to #4, but they do. People may claim in surveys or in think-pieces that they really want to live in apartments in mixed-use neighborhoods, but almost everyone who actually lives in pic related could have bought a condo in a mixed-use neighborhood and chose not to; I regard that purchasing decision as more indicative of their true preferences than anything that comes up in mere conversation.

Yeah it looks really cool but that is because the murricans basically built their cities from scratch. Where as ours evolved over hundreds of years from very small villages.

So its natural ours would be really chaotic and unplanned where as theirs would be very efficient and well thought out.

I would agree with this, too. So as an amendment to my post I would add that a more fractal road system with more cul-de-sacs than in pic related solves for #1 to #4 even more thoroughly.

I actually gotta agree with you on this one, there's a point in which planning conflicts with human nature and there is a fine line between efficiency and being comfortable enough to not want to kill yourself.
