In 1968-69 there was a worldwide flu pandemic. It killed between 1-3 million people, including 30,000 in the UK alone. If you ask people who were alive then about it they most likely won't remember it, and if you search for information about it online you won't find a huge amount of information. It caused no economic collapse and no hysteria, yet in the UK (and much of the world) right now the news media is hysterical about coronavirus, despite it killing only 6 people here in the UK so far. That's quite a lot less than 30,000, although of course the number could grow... But can you imagine just how hysterical the news media would be if there were 30,000 deaths here, given how beserk they have gone about 6? Can you imagine the effect on the economy it would have?

Well, it is a bit like things we have seen before. Coronaviruses were discovered over fifty years ago, and we have had the SARS and MERS outbreaks since then. But anyway, the vast majority of people who have been confirmed to have it survive. And that's the people who are confirmed. Given that signs suggest many people just have very mild symptoms and then recover, there could be a huge number of people who get it and never report it.
If there is something unprecedented about the coronavirus which is of real significance, it isn't the virus itself, but the utterly bonkers reaction from news media, and the resulting effect this has had on society.
