According to the CDC 61 million people contracted it in the USA and 12,00 died from it, including a higher than average amount of young or otherwise healthy people. It's a virus designed for research against a plausible outbreak targeting the Chinese population -- it affects the ACE2 receptor which is predominantly in Asians, hence the massive and more deadly outbreak in China. Outside of China it seems that only the elderly and infirm are in serious danger. Even other Asians don't seem to have it as bad.
