The Germans knew that there was no peace with the Soviets. They had secretly amassed the biggest army in the world, tested in several conflicts (Ukraine, Belarussia, Poland, Finland...) and would have swamped Germany in late 41 or 42.
It was a preventive war. The sheer numbers should suffice to make this abundantly clear. For example, Soviets had 25+ thousand tanks, among them the heaviest (KV series) and best (T-34) tanks in the world, outclassing everyone else. Numberwise that's more than all other armies combined while Germany attacked them with about three thousand tanks.
