We are quietly bracing for impact; Covid-19 will eventually make it to remote central desert Aboriginal communities and when it does, there will be too many sick and not enough hospital beds.
Our region is the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in Western Australia, made up of 9 populated communities and two abandoned communities. Of those 9 communities, only two have full time clinics staffed with nurses. Of those clinics, none are capable of handling even one (1) Covid-19 case.
That will mean that all cases will not be identified in time, and will be treated as pneumonia. They will be flown to Kalgoorlie or Alice Springs, or Perth if there's any available beds there.
TL;DR a lot of central desert Aboriginal people are likely to die this year as a result of the Covid-19 virus. It's a matter of when -not if- it gets out here.
