We have more than tens of millions of people here so there's many regions of American ethnic foods. New England food, Southwestern, Cajun, Southern, Midwestern, Tejano (TexMex), different regional barbecue, etc. Hotdog, burgers and pizza are the most obvious ones across all places, but that's because they were brought in the 19th century wave of migration and spread to most cities, but every region has its own cuisine. Mac and cheese was apparently invented by Thomas Jefferson, so that has to be the most American food.

I would say Barbecue is the quintessential American class. Burgers though common in American dining establishments can be traced back to some European countries. Barbecue however has been an American classic. I use the word Barbecue to describe any process of grilling and smoking meats over a wood fired/charcoal pit or physical grill.

Yes, Americans are fatter than most western nations. Yes, our portion sizes are typically too big. Our food is damn good though.
