Celibacy is not a doctrine. It is canon law, which of course may be chanced. It was truly introduced much, much later, however it proved to be really useful for multiple reasons. For example clergy can focus on their role as spiritual fathers 100%, they don't fall into nepotism quite as easy, no family troubles, no heirs to their position, and so on.
