I computed an estimate per country of the number of days until the healthcare system is overrun. The methodology is simple: >assume 10% of (confirmed) infections need an IC bed >assume 10% of IC beds are free at any time (best case) That means a reasonable estimate for the total consecutive infection capacity is given by: >(# IC beds) * 10 / 10 = (# IC beds)
We can then use the growth factor of 1.2 to compute the number of days until the number of infections exceeds the number of IC beds. In effect, we compute the following:
# days until overrun = CEIL((log(# IC beds) - log(# infections))/log(growth factor))
If you disagree with my numbers you can plug in your own.
The number we get is a gross overestimation. A localized heavy outbreak can really overrun the local healthcare system in a matter of days. Still, we can use the estimate to decide which countries to watch.
The numbers are as follows, ranked from least to most days:
Italy: 1 (of course we have seen that Italy is already over capacity. They are deploying field hospitals as we speak.) Switzerland: 6 Sweden: 7 France: 11 Netherlands: 12 Spain: 12 Belgium: 13 UK: 16 Germany: 18 Luxembourg: 24
You can google the number of IC beds per country yourself and check my computations. I will update these tomorrow with the current numbers.
To the Italian from earlier who claims he knows the Dutch healthcare system: Yes many more beds than 10% are free at any time, but our hospitals are chronically understaffed. In the case of a sudden spike in demand, as for example in 2018 during a heavy flu season, there is simply not enough medical personnel for every bed. Therefore, 10% is optimistic.
