Even the best vaccines are only 95% effective, realistically a first generation vaccine against COVID will be ~80% at best. The primary purpose of a vaccine is not to protect an individual, it's to protect the population via herd immunity.

The winning strategy is to make the vaccine widely and freely available. You target the most vulnerable populations first. The first 10 vaccines go to the front-line HCPs, not the rich, otherwise you're throwing them away.

How about Bernie Sanders backs proposals to deregulate insurance so that poor people can at least get some coverage that protects them against serious accidents and such life-threatening pandemics up to a reasonable amount? Why does the government force insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions (most of these conditions being self-inflicted) with no lifetime maximum and no premium discrimination? You never have insurance, and then suddenly get a policy for $1,000 a month so you can have everyone else pay for your $1,000,000 a month lung-cancer treatment *indefinitely* because you were a life-long smoker?
