Someone with dissenting opinions gets downvoted until his posts are buried and may as well not even exist, while even the most banal garbage gets driven to the top as long as it enthusiastically matches the groupthink. While actual bans may be rare, non-conforming posters will only remain until they either recognize the futility of what they're doing and leave (self-ban) or modify their opinions to get more upvotes.
As people on the right are systematically banned - either explicitly or only in effect - the 'center' moves further left and the overton window follows. After years of this, you end up with what you see today.
