“You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great - and that's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.” — ELON MUSK, SPACEX
Welcome to /etm/. This is a place on Yas Forums to discuss everything space related(with a concentration on Mars). I normally post the general once a week every saturday between 8pm to 10pm UK time.
If you are new here, these videos will get you in the mood for some discussion: >What Would A Million Person Mars Colony Look Like? youtube.com/watch?v=JaimO7nvzzQ

"... don't tell me that man doesn't belong out there. Man belongs wherever he wants to go and he’ll do plenty well when he gets there." and "Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death." - Wernher von Braun
Watch this if you still believe we went to the moon.

Bump. Will have to leave for an hour or two in a little but will be back. There was an interesting thread about space travel and ayy lmaos last night and there was discussion about interstellar travel. But we got to go to Mars first!
Mars is needed to start going outward into the solar system and later beyond it, and to try colonizing the surface of another planet. Venus would be different.
Wyatt Price
Venus doesn't have a magnetic field either. In either case an orbital satellite providing magnetic shielding should work on Mars or Venus.
William Bennett
>Mars is lame. >Cloud cities are way cooler.
well it's great that have you opinions regarding what's cool and what isn't, but "cloud cities" are outside of our technological reach at the moment and since this is about our survival and not what is coool, traveling to venus and deploying a fucking zeppelin for a grand total of 5 people to live in, isn't exactly high up on mankind's "to-do" list lol
>It doesn't have a magnetosphere and you have no idea why that is important. The vast majority of space travel leaves you unshielded. If you are not prepared to colonize Mars, you are not prepared for interstellar travel. We as men are not limited to exploring that which is safe and understood. We can overcome this obstacle and go beyond.
anyone who has looked into and beyond the Fermi Paradox knows there are many reasons as to why we haven't made contact with intelligent life. i bet that was a fun thread
Colton Watson
that wont happen in our life time. but we will create it for our future lives. (yes reincarnation is real) i would say 100 years from now space travel will be huge. so come back as a smart person so you can build you own space craft and leave earth.
We need to kill off a large portion of the conservative population before we can even consider making strides towards space colonization. Only degenerates campaign against progress for the benefit of all mankind.
Anthony Diaz
>It would get boring after a week. An entire planet mostly unexplored and you are worried about boredom? Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean... the psychological aspect of being so far away from earth's elements would be hard but still, it's MARS. You're a HUMAN ON MARS. Pretty exciting desu
Leo Anderson
Have you guys heard about Elon musk making his starship plant a mass producing plant? He seems to desire to mass produce rockets, I don't think he should. Think about it, he is always worried about budget and cost but suddenly he wants to dump huge amounts of cash into mass production. He should build starlink first so he has more funds for this kind of stuff, if he goes too fast it can kill his company.
Oliver Hall
I thank the honorable gentleman for providing us with the benefit of his views and indeed, you are perfectly entitled to your view, but you’d be hard pressed to find a anyone that’s gives a flying flamingo what your views.
Hunter Butler
Due to how starship is being made it's cheap as fuck atm. He wants one made every week but that would be pushing it even for Elon. One a month even would be revolutonary.
Zachary Taylor
NOOOOOOOO YOU HAVE TO SPEND 5TRILLION PER YEAR TO BABYSIT NIGGERS NOOOOOOO YOU CANT GO INTO SPACE AND LEAVE US BEHIND
>We need to kill off a large portion of the conservative population before we can even consider making strides towards space colonization
i'm sorry what the fuck? explain exactly what you mean by this right now..
are you solely blaming NASA's lack of funding on conservatives? are you blaming all of mankind's lacking in space exploration on conservatives?
>Only degenerates campaign against progress for the benefit of all mankind. i mean, are you being fucking serious right now? and don't mistake my genuine bewilderment as support for conservative scum, many of whom are centrist retards who only care about their countries economy for the next five minutes. I'm assuming, if you're being serious... you think... the democrats would provide us with TURE progress in space?
Aiden Morales
>i'm sorry what the fuck? explain exactly what you mean by this right now.. I think he means that you're whiny and over-emotional. The space-faring men we need can control their emotions.
Samuel Butler
>if he goes too fast it can kill his company. at this point he could probably ask for donations and millions (perhaps even tens of/hundreds of millions) of people would throw money at him
Julian Wright
Are.*
Xavier Campbell
>The space-faring men Exactly, so only conservatives basically. No idea what schizo nonsense you're spewing with "We need to kill off a large portion of the conservative population". It's clearly the welfare population holding down 99% of humanity, nigger
Joshua Barnes
i'm not about to sit here and watch a back and forth that could last all night where an american blames the absolute state of space exploration on """conservatives"". I'd rather get him to fuck off now so the thread can be comfy. I'll base how worthwhile this discussion is going to be on his next reply, i'm really not expecting much.
>How many times has the new "spaceship" imploded already? How many times does it have to be pointed out that those are tanks being tested, not "spaceships"?
James Richardson
Based polan, there are many retarded and outlandish shit being posted on pol, this isn't one of them.
John Nguyen
>every saturday between 8pm to 10pm UK time Good to know. I'll take some time to try the sauce and come back with spices next week.
Parker Martinez
Doesn't matter how many times you pint it out. Shills and retards will always say the same things.
>2 tanks stacked on top of one another >with a rudimentary mount for a single engine for a firing test if it survives the pressure test >This is a "spaceship" I can see you don't understand the basics of agile development transplanted from software to hardware, that's ok.
Jaxon Kelly
Genuine question here, why go to Mars when the Moon is closer, easier to get on, has easily accessible water, and valuable resource for construction and space travel? It just seems like it would be easier to start colonization on the Moon and then move further outward after setting up a strong base of interstellar operations.
Jack Bennett
Look at how many times the falcon 9 fucked up landing, works great now. Failure is part of the process.
Benjamin Evans
40 meters of regolith. Hard to land anything of significant mass in that fucking desert. Mars has an atmosphere. The moon will never have one.
Aiden Stewart

Yeah, so one of my workers was trying to connect the dark drive to the cockpit console panel but he came across a hive of chinkides within the inner walls of your ship. You do realize they spread Coroda plague, right? We need access to your flight logs and a squad of guild guards are coming to detain you. I'm sorry Lugio but we can't spread the plague from the Mediterra sector.
Anyone knows why they changed the name from "Mars Colonial Transport" to the series of names they chose later? I can just assume the word "colonial" made the PC brigade in the space community whine and accuse. Anyone here knows more?
possibility of self sufficiency on Mars, moon however... Some people do ruminate of mining the moon for helium three however, or sifting through it if since the helium 3 might be evenly dispersed in some areas

May I add this as a recreational read? Basically a noir detective story based on Mars. The short story it is based upon won both the hugo award and the nebula award, the most notable awards in science fiction.
