Some people see numbers that way. I actaully do. I break numbers down into components and then re add them. but others dont. the problem with any "system" is that not all people do this. Instructors need to recognize that different people learn (and calculate) in different ways. taking 2 from the five and making the 8 a 10 actaully makes the equation simpler. because 10 + 3 is easier then 8+5. but not all brains work that way, in fact most dont. the problem is trying to jam one system down everyones throats.

I had to do the same paper in middle school, we talked about all different religions but Islam and Judaism the most.

Common core math is essentially what I learned in my CompSci university courses. It’s extraneous/unnecessary on a practical level; but I find it interesting and fun.

That being said, the average pre-teen is a concrete learner - NOT an abstract learner. Concrete core is dumbing down the students since the difficulty will affect their developing minds.

I had common core in my school, they would change the the whole curriculum around every few months. It confused the hell out of me growing up, my parents could never help me with it either. And now I suck at math.

Common Core has two purposes

1. Move math from concrete and quantifiable to abstract and qualifiable. Jew researchers noticed that white and Asian boys excelled the most at math so they made it based on tricky word games so niggers and women could get the same grades for their "interpretation" of numbers

2. Make various subjects otherwise unteachable to a parent or laymen and change the national test standards to where no homeschooled or even private school student could actually pass tests required to advance through school. Public school is now the only avenue to learn this madness

If you killed every person with IQ above 50 excluding people that do IQ tests, the average IQ would still be 100 and standard deviation would still be 15

Have no idea, I use these mental tricks all the time but it developed organically and it's second nature. The kids they're trying to force this on will never learn this and it will be more of a burden to them by adding steps.

I actually think common core is a better way of thinking. Like, if I ask you 28+7, you probably just know it's 35 because of memorization, but it's more efficient to deconstruct it as 28 + 2 + 5.

Common core is just teaching base ten place value and grouping. The way they’ve tried to deliver it is insane.

This is a bad example but I think the goal is to get students to simplify an equation so they can perform faster mental math, now that calculators are everywhere, so the goal is to be faster then the calculator.

It doesn’t really work with an already super simplified equation like 7 + 7 but for example 425 + 967 you can minus “5” and “7” so you have a smiple 960 + 420 = 1,380 + 12 for 1,392.

The rest is indeed bullshit but I've always used this method when adding smallish numbers. It's shit when writing your work but you can do arithmetic in your head this way really quickly.

You are adding 4 to 26 to make a clean 30. That means you're taking 4 from 17. Think of it like a zero sum game. Now you have 30 + 13. This is incredibly easy to add in your head without having to carry any digits.
