Ricky Gervais is using this argument towards Christians mostly and so we can only deconstruct what he's saying within a set of limitations.
Of course it's possible that God exists and we're all wrong about him but I think a personal God would have made himself known by now. If God is impersonal and does not interact with our reality at all then we will probably never know unless he's left clues in creation or has a plan for us after we die.
Unfortunately all this God talk operates at the abstract level and so we'll probably never find physical evidence unless he left clues for us. There are some biologists, physicists and mathematicians who became religious due to their findings but there'll always be an aspect of faith to Christianity.
You can use logical arguments to "prove" the existence of a God but unfortunately we can't use them to prove a specific one.
