I lived in SF for 3 months last year, that map is on a lucky day OUT OF RUSH HOUR, there is no fucking way you can travel that much at 5PM

well for one thing one is a mostly flat open landscape while the other is hilly/mountainous with a large bay in the middle.

SF is hemmed in on all sides by bay, inlet, mountain and tidal plus the constant threat of earthquakes. Compare London to NYC.

According to some random ass youtube documentary I saw, we had over 6k miles of rail for horse pulled street cars in its prime. Today, every type of tram, train, subway etc. combined is only 5.4k miles. And when they went electric it was 11k miles of rail, literally everywhere. Then we gave it all up for buses and cars because they felt more convenient and futuristic and most of all, more economical. Other historical events from war, great depression and zoning laws (like the suburb example some user posted) were also an influence. They're starting to come back though.

Google 'white flight' and then compare the relative homogeneity of European countries during the construction of their public transit compared to the diversity of American cities.
Basically, while Europeans were building these subways and lines, white Americans were fleeing the crime-ridden cities and taking the majority of the wealth with them, creating a highly decentralized population. This decentralized population made building public transit much less economical, as the people who would benefit the most (people in the city) were people who didn't pay taxes, essentially.
There's exceptions (New York, San Francisco), but for the most part American cities are sprawling with very low population densities when compared to European cities.
Also San Francisco takes up that tiny bit of the northern part of the southern peninsula closing up the bay, there, so the major financial center is completely covered.

Very true most Americans don’t know this, specifically ford and gm brought trolley cars and convinced the government that buses were better and more efficient, which they were at the time and that led to us being overly reliant on roads which worked in their favor
