No. I've read all the Slave Narratives, these are official documents of interviews of former slaves sponsored by the US government.

Only about 10% of slaves complained about mistreatment. OTOH about half of them said their masters were kind to them.

There's also a lot of stuff in there about slaves being afraid of the woods and swimming. Some things never change.

I highly recommend reading them, lots of comfy stories. My favorite was the slave who helped his master hide all the salt pork and other dry food items, the northern soldiers would ransack plantation homes and take anything of value but more importantly, the food. The slave who talks about helping to hide the food also mentioned how after the soldiers left, they had a big BBQ or "pig roast" as they called it back then.

To answer your question, once it was abolished, many former slaves chose to stay with their masters. Of course there were bad apples, masters that horrifically abused their slaves. But most were kind and just and provided meals, shelter, security, stability. Many former slaves understood they would be worse off if they left.
