Death rate has been around 1/3 for international closed cases for a while. This probably isn't representative because:

1 - not every single case is even confirmed. Some people will just get flu-like symptoms and recover alone.
2 - it is probably faster to die than recover.

It's impossible to get a true mortality rate this early.

why should it on average, tkae longer to recover than to die? severe cases take longer than mild cases and severe cases have higher mortality, so it would make sense for fatal cases to be longer on average than non fatal cases.

This is my argument for why it will be bad, but not any of the doom versions. The best data set we have is the diamond princess. It is the most controled experiment we have on the course of the disease in the most vulnerable age groups. With proper treatment we are looking at 1-2% mortality. However the sheer volume of cases may end up overwhelming us, so just slow it down drag it out as best we can and this will be bad, but not world ending.

Out of the 700 who have it, 400 still have it and 200 are hospitalized.

If you break down the numbers by age, so far, the death rate on the diamond princess is 12.5% for 80+ and 2.5% for those 70+ with one person unknown age.

When you catch an illness such as Covid19 and it puts holes in your lungs but doesn’t kill you, technically you have survived but you’ll never breath properly again so that’s nice
