I think often times, shallow is a better word than dumb. I got my degree in physics years ago, many of which have gone on to do amazing research, so they weren't dumb. For those that don't actually play the sports themselves, it's almost always about the team as a surrogate tribe, and the sense of community and social context this brings.
Sportsball is often seen as vidya for boomers here, but in some sense it is actually more like the LGBT+ stuff - artificial identities to fill the void of atomization and keep the masses pacified while the meat and bones of their society are deconstructed in front of their eyes.

To answer your question, being a normie is about social conformity and WHY do they want to socially conform so much? Sex. Sexual gratification. It's one of the basic biological impulses that feed our subconcious drive for everything. Sports are basically a way of showing off sexual prowess without outright declaring it as so. We're brainwashed to like or watch sports, we're told if we aren't interested we won't fit in and thus, won't be able to have sex.

Who gets to play sports? The people the coaches and teachers pick? Who do they pick? The good looking kids. Same with cheer-leading and dance squads. The literally take all the good looking kids aside and tell them to join these teams and groups. Then they basically train them to be sexual entertainers. Fighting each other, rubbing all over each other, filling out romances exactly like Hollywood movies tell them.

Everyone else is told to go to pep rallies or get suspended. To have school spirit. To clap and applaud like good little c.uckolds while the buff, straight-faced kids beat on each other and the good looking girls dance in front of them.

It's one big sexual display with sports and saying you're interested in it and keeping up with it is a subconscious sexual signal that you're in on the orgy and invited to the group. Not everyone can get laid, but having spectators fluffs up the sexual ego of the participants even more! So they encourage it.
