I'm a native Austinite who grew up in the music scene. Nashville and LA is where musicians go to get famous, Austin is where musicians come to get by. Yeah, there's some guy with a guitar in every bar/restaurant in Austin. So fucking what? SRV's been dead longer than I've been alive and not one important act has come out of Austin since.

I for one couldn't be happier with SX getting cancelled. That shit went from a music festival to an overcrowded tech expo and knock-off Marti Gras. It's been extremely ghetto the last few years as every nigger from Houston drives over and shits up the place with their loud-ass speakers in their cars. The whole thing's a complete shitshow and makes navigating Austin (which already has horrible traffic) borderline impossible. Fucking tourists can stay the fuck home, boo fucking hoo.

Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Spoon, Butthole Surfers, Ghostland Observatory, fucking Meat Puppets. There is always music downtown. Almost every major artist of our era has played at SXSW.

That said, I've never been to the festival once and have lived here 22 years.

Austin was always overrated by magazines and "best of" lists used by real estate advertisers to get people to move here, but it wasn't always a terrible place. It was /comfy/ as fuck up until the early 00s, great place to grow up. But as of 2020 it's just another traffic-choked, California colony, service industry urban globohomo metro. A place where middle-class coastal faggots can come and pretend to be rich while the locals get crushed by the rapid development. It's a shiny, glass dystopia.
