Many children have McDonald's Convention day off from school in America. Most do not go to the actual convention, but many do. The best comparison I can make is it's like an exclusively American Mecca. Many people take McDonald's day as just a time to spend with family and give thanks to the founder of McDonalds and what he's done for our country.
It's kind of weird explaining it to a non-american, but I hope I was at least able to give you a little bit of understanding into the custom.

Massive public gatherings are probably going to be highly discouraged for at least the next year. I think Coronachan will hopefully be relatively mild for most people, but it's not worth spreading it. Most conventions are just an excuse to travel and have a fun time in a new city for a few days....the real information can be spread digitally. It sucks, but that's the way it is.
Get used to mass public gatherings being reduced, not just because of disease. As long as the West is enriched with Muslims, there's no future in which mass public gatherings would have been a good idea anyway when you take into account the possibilities of drone terrorism and other big problems.

Damn, me and my wife pre-ordered tickets months ago. Our daughters have really wanted to go ever since some of their friends from school got to go. We where excited to try to win the burger toss and maybe win those McDonald's gift cards. Oh well, at least we still have the day off from work.
