Britain may have been able to hold onto the empire without the second world war setting up a potential 3 way cold war between the British empire, Central powers, and USA - each having enough territory to avoid direct confrontation. Austria-Hungary was granting more autonomy and independence to it's smaller states peacefully. A major war goal of Germany in WW1 was a European customs and trade Union -- lo and behold that is what exists now. Imagine if it had been created without incinerating the whole continent and keeping half of it under the Commie boot for 50 more years after the destruction.
