In my opinion it's a matter of thinking they are too good for the world and either become irrationally vindictive towards anyone that is against them or maybe suicide. I've seen it a few times. It's when they reach that brink and either abandon the left or just become crazy burdens on everyone.
They said when they were executing the communist during Stalins purge they would be reciting marxist doctrine as their last words to prove that even though they were being killed by their own they were still true believers.
