College used to not cost as much as it does now but the government kind of fucked everyone over by letting minorities and women into colleges and because of the surplus of students they decided to let a third party handle the student finances/loans.

This third party cared little for education and entirely for profit. This is why student loans cost so much.

The 2nd the government said "yeah, we'll back that up" or "you need to issue all these no matter the risk" the universities thought "sweet, we can just charge whatever we want and these people will pay."

Debts are denominated in USD. I can’t speak of my own experience as I don’t have student loans, but a buddy of mine is currently deep in debt for them. He currently owes more than the original amount, despite making his payments on time and basically bending his budget around it. He graduated 8 years ago. He doesn’t try to deny that he made the decision to take out the loan, but he was also 17. He wasn’t old enough to drink, vote, or even die for his country, but he was able to make a financial situation that would exist for the rest of his life that he couldn’t possibly comprehend at that age. We were from a real small town area where it was grinded into you from childhood, “you HAVE to go to college if you want any future”.

You can say what you want about the people who take out the loans, but you can’t deny it’s a predatory system.

Well if they took the higher education in a actually usefull field, stem for example, and not in liberal arts or gender studies they would be able to pay off they're debt and not whine.

Eight years ago I got my Accounting degree with only 12k in debt. Best decision I ever made and it's all paid off now. People who go on about this topic one way or another are financially illiterate. Most of those loans will never be repaid. Ever. Bankruptcy is the obvious result, and it's what would have happened if not for Obama making student loans not eligible for bankruptcy. He did this because he saw what was coming(a la the US credit rating taking a shit and the interest rate spiking), but unfortunately this no-bankruptcy 'solution' is the equivalent of a kid hiding his dirty dishes under his bed. The problem's still there, and the longer it stays the worse it's going to stink. The US government made(and is still making) these completely reckless, totally irresponsible loans. Just because they've nigger-rigged the system to artificially inflate their credit score doesn't mean their actual risk level isn't climbing ever higher.
