The French didn't really colonize people and lord over them. The French just intermarried, had sex with natives, and did commerce with them. And sort of tried to convert them to Christianity, but there was minimal ruling over them.
That's why so many towns in the midwest and western USA are named after French. It was primarily the French who first really explored deep into the North American interior and traded with natives and learned how to translate native american languages. As well as conversions.
Detroit, St. Louis, Des Moines, Cape Girardeau, Creve Couer, Grosse Pointe, Marquette and on and on. Most of the upper midwest was first explored and the first settlements were made by frenchmen.
