Yes, Dragon Maid is popular, and that means money which KyoAni needs desperately, cancelling it would be throwing away all the work already done before the fire.
Even with Takemoto gone, they still have a lot of talent left and I'm sure some other director can take over.

The material they were talking about was the upcoming VEG movies and all of their legacy work. The company has not said a single thing about the production of Dragonmaid S2. Part of what you heard was wishful thinking.
