They did a pretty good job with the dub, purists here will say otherwise. The sub is still much better though. I've made a point to watch almost everything Lelouch's (and kallen's) japanese voice actor has been in.

Shirley’s death was what pushed Lelouch over the deep end. After this he Went from noble freedom fighter to just straight up super villain.

the scene you're describing is fucking hilarious because lelouch's dub VA is giving the performance of a lifetime and shirley's is just phoning it in like a dumbass. the result is bizarre.
