Trigger/Imaishi's entire gimmick is catering to xD-nostalgia and saturday morning cartoons. This is why their shows are basically meth for americans and hit-and-miss everywhere else.

It was definitely part of the xD era, but I don't think there's anything about the show that would prevent first time viewers from enjoying it. The xD era was very much defined by those sentiments that xD weebs projected onto anime. If anything, I'd wager that the show's over the top and stereotypical nature would make it endearing to contemporary viewers as an obvious ur-anime.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have a certain nostalgia for the era, but I have largely grown out of it. So I can't say that I want it to return. At the very least, I can take solace in the knowledge that shows about cute girls doing cute things will be eternal.
I suppose that's the reason why God impregnated a virgin JC to usher in the birth of JC.
