It's a character driven examination of human insecurity and interaction. For that I love it. Is it the best story? No. Is it perfect? Hell no. There is a lot that's wrong with the show writing wise. Personally, I liked the way plot elements were hinted at throughout the show but I can see where some find it annoying, or feel as if the mystery that Anno was trying to create is dishonest by not showing the viewer enough information before big reveals. And let's be honest, EoTV kind of sucks and the movie totally blows it out of the water. That ending ruined the show for a good friend of mine, who expected something better after such a long buildup and didn't appreciate the extremely blunt delivery of Anno's "love yourself" message. Of course I'm aware of the financial and scheduling situation at Gainax which produced EoTV, but after such a heavy show it's so underwhelming.
Everything else is great though. Eva has some of my favorite art, sound design and voice acting in all of anime, and the lore once understood is really cool.
It's a mess, but a beautiful mess.

Eva's are my favorite mecha designs...shit like gundam or power rangers they're just so bulky and tanky, I like the sleek ottermode type look to the mechas here

Do you like Anno and Gainax? Their early work was a little Super Robot for my taste. But when Evangelion came out in '95, I t hink they really came into their own commercially and artistically. With its clear crisp animation and sound, Neon Genesis Evangelion was an instant classic that revolutionized the mecha genre and anime as a whole. He's been compared to Hayao Miyazaki, but I think Hedeaki Anno has a far more bitter, cycnical sense of humor. In '97, they released End of Evangelion, their most accomplished film. I think their undisputed masterpiece is Komm Susser Tod, a song so catchy most people probably dont listen to the lyrics. But they should, because its not just about the pleasures of oblivion, and the importance of death. It's also a personal statement about the film and director itself.

I know you're shitposting but I hate this meme. Evangelion is a lovenote to super robot shows and tokusatsu. It's just not obnoxious about it the way something like TTGL is.

No, I did not. It's been like 3 years but I remember the first 6 episodes being okay, the middle is a big blur, and I didn't care by the end. I do remember EOE being funny though, not sure why.

I really enjoyed it, I think it's a bit overrated though, people claim it's some philosophical juggernaut when it's just basic existentialism. The presentation of both endings are fucking fantastic in my opinion.
