Because Naruto literally could not have made any sensible argument against his point of view, so for the story's sake Sasuke just had to give up on his plans after tying with Naruto.
Kind of like how there was no sensible way to defeat Madara and his ideology, so he had to be offed in another way

I mean, I know that most twelve-year-old Naruto fans are not the most critical thinkers, but even still, the fact that nothing has pretty much changed in the ending and in Boruto is still pretty obvious

The time skip can't come soon enough. I hope old Himawari plays a big role in the next anime after Boruto.
