It's not edgy in the sense that it tries to shock you. But it doesn't hold back from depidting how fucked up the feudal era was.
The story begins with describing the relationship between feudal lords, retainers and samurais as of that between sadists and masochists. Which is pretty accurate.
First manga I ever read was this one
years ago when it was still being released, it was very popular. you see it get recommended every now and then, same as berserk. those 2 mangas were actually one of the first mangas ive read
Takehiko Inoue is probably my favorite mangaka of all time, but I try not to say that too often just to avoid being equated with Vagabondfags.
Inio Asano
Naoki Urasawa
Taiyo Matsumoto
How can he draw in that style? Does he just take forever to release new chapters?
shit compared to the novel
I guess it depends on when you started getting into manga and your taste at the time. I was pretty young when I started reading manga and Vagabond was apparently releasing in the US and started just a little bit before I started reading manga. I don't remember seeing it in stores but then I'm sure I didn't look because I was mostly reading shonenshit at the time.
If someone was using the internet frequently in the early 00s (which I wasn't) it was probably more well known to them. But your phrasing of "years ago" makes me think you're talking about something more recent. Like 2010 instead of 2002.
this
>Not the best Samurai manga
>Not the best Inoue manga
Why are Vagabond fans deluded.
Vagabond was monthly but Inoue was drawing stuff not dissimilar in Slam Dunk when that ended and that was weekly, he's very talented.
As far as detail in weekly series go, Morita and Hara, and maybe his teacher Hojo, might have him beat though.
The whole samurai shtick falls apart once you realize they got completely btfo by portoguese chads because rapiers are fundamentally better than katanas.
Not to mention that roman legions which existed more than 1000 years prior to the first samurai would btfo any japanese army of musashi's period.
Man I love them, but japs are so pathetic when it comes to warrior culture.
