No no no, they care NOW. During the anime airing they didn't even think Re: Zero would be all that big a deal and they wanted to push the main girl because aside from one random producer who thought it was good they didn't know shit. So then they just stuck to their guns for the anime run and only afterwards realized they maybe fucked up and lost big money, especially after the LNs didn't take a hit for Rem going potato and that only seemingly making affection for her stronger. They really should've known better, but fucking things up is what production committees with no connection to their franchises do best.
