I am currently trying to convince my friend to watch Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. And once again the "No it's ugly" argument pops up. Ignoring the fact that it's perfectly acceptable art. It made me realize how many series people miss out on cause of this argument. So today I would like to make a post for the "ugly". Please consider the actual writing of a show. A lot of the time the artist is more than capable of making generic samey art. They chose this style for a reason. Once you get past the dopey faces of Kaiji you will find a gripping drama of NEETs putting it all on the line for debt forgiveness. A relatable scenario I assure you.
Anyways this is now a Kaiji / "ugly" anime discussion. So lets get some gambling anime that doesn't suck. And some anime we want people to give a chance.
Why should people force themselves to watch things they don't want to because you said so? Kaiji was well executed but I didn't like it. All the zawa zawa tension is just irritating to me rather than gripping.
Asher Carter
What the fuck is Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor? Is that the name they released it under in the West? I bet you want him to watch the dub as well. Kimoi.
Tyler Foster
>generic samey art Nigger, nobody's issue with Kaiji's art is that it doesn't look generic and samey, and this is a dumb-ass defense people use whenever someone doesn't like any artstyle. It looks like shit, that's why people don't like it. Look at the manga FKMT wrote with Kawaguchi Kaji doing the art. Kawaguchi's art isn't generic or samey, it suits the story content and tone just fine, and it also looks a lot better. FKMT just isn't a very good artist.
Jack Lee
No idea about Kaiji, but I watched Akagi and it felt more like a comedy to me. You're taking this way too seriously, user
Michael Jackson
Tekkon Kinkreet is ugly but in a beautiful way too. It's old so it's not like you hear much about it anymore.
Getting an official name doesn't mean it got a dub. Fukumoto's art is a pleb filter so if your friend won't watch it then give up and just find discussion online. Fukumoto is insanely popular as soon as you step inside manga readers circles.
Luke Reyes
I actually saw a lot of people argue that Detective Conan looks ugly.
I love kaiji's art and don't think it looks ugly at all. On other hand Baki sounds fun but looks so hideous I don't see how any one can find it appealing.
Carson Howard
Taste is acquired. Can't force it down their throats. Just let him be a shitter and if he wants to grow up he will.
Jonathan Martin
Baki is unparalleled in conveying power and kinetic energy. The art might be unconventional, but the qualities of this style make the whole experience unironically beautiful.
Let's look at it from a completely logical perspective.
It IS ugly. Compared to 90% of anime, it simply is unappealing. Now, why would someone choose something ugly instead of something beautiful? When you start an anime you don't really know what you're going to get. You might love it, you might hate it. So why would you start something that you may or may not love but that is also ugly? There is no reason. You say it's because you might miss out on a great show, but that's a gamble you take every time you watch any series. So why start off in the red?
Jayden Davis
HE HATES IT!
Josiah Collins
How much of a newfag are you? Kaiji has been praised here for ages.
Thomas Gray
If a person thinks like that, they're not worth convincing.
Adrian Miller
>Please Consider "ugly" Anime But I do, the only time art is offputting is when it's extremely bad with lacking fundamentals like original higurashi sprites or fist of the seeker and even then I'll still read/watch it as long as the story or characters seem interesting enough. In comparison stuff like Kaiji isn't even ugly, just unconventionally stylized.
This is a manga/anime, not a fucking cult. If people don't like the bootleg detective conan art style no one cares, I also don't like one pisses art style, but I am not going to make a thread about it
Benjamin Ramirez
if this is supposed to be ugly then ping pong is a hot pile a shit
Aiden Baker
It's fine if you don't like it, but you gave it a shot, that's what matters. And the reason why we should "force"(no one said anything about forcing. But convincing) people to watch those shows, is because they are missing out. In other words, we feel empathy for them. And it would give us another person we could talk about this show. It's a win-win situation
Austin Rivera
>not liking original higurashi sprites I'm so sorry that you were born with half a brain.
Christopher Rivera
Far more people miss out on good anime because they won't watch it if it's "isekai" or "shoujo" or whatever else
Josiah Allen
FKMT's artstyle isn't ugly though, it's a pure pleb filter, same for Baki's art, they're not for the eyes of the uninitiated
Justin Powell
Why is why OP put 'ugly' in quotationmarks
Brayden Cook
On that note i fucking hate shoujo artstyle. Especially all the flowery backgrounds. Many anime tone it down but I find most manga unreadable because of it, which is a pity since manga are usually better story wise.
Connor Clark
>They chose this style for a reason Yeah because they can't draw better.
Julian Cook
Kaiji art is a great pleb filter so don't worry about it
