I never understood this. I heard about how much of a crybaby he was and expecting him to be complain and crying all the time, but when I watched the show he was barely ever crying. Even then he still killed Angle Boy instead of allowing humanity to die, even then when given the option to live perfectly happy forever with everyone via instrumentality he rejected it because he held value in humanity's individuality. Shinji's story is about him stumbling, filled with fear and being manipulated by damn near everyone aroudn him and still ultimately finding the strength to get back up and finally by the very end being able to make a choice for himself.
