And yes it is pretty much dead. There's 1 show a year that has lots of violence and some blood pinatas. But the stuff from back then is gone. We're talking ripping someones head off and eating their brain, like Gunm. Or having your stomach open up and the organs fall out, like in Akira. We don't get that stuff anymore.

I rewatched Highschool of the Dead the other day and for all the violence and blood there's no super graphic stuff like you'd see in some horror movies. No flesh rotting filled with worms, no broken arms with bones sticking out, no organs hanging out of someones injured belly.

You guys do realize that hyperviolent anime was almost NEVER popular in Japan, and all hyperviolent anime were restricted to OVAs and found more success in the Americas than in Western countries, right?
Classics to us like Genocyber or Wicked City aren't classics to Japanese OVA fans.

Hyperviolent OVAs were always unprofitable and that's part of why they died. The other reason why hyperviolent OVAs died is during the mid-90s, Japanese right-wingers and butthurt parents protested and passed a law that restricted how violent anime can truly be.

Regardless, TV anime is just as violent now as TV anime was then, compare something such as Saint Seiya (arguably the most violent TV anime of the 80s) to something modern like Killing Bites, which is just as violent.

The way violence is depicted has changed. Sure there's violence and blood and people die, but it's less gory.

The best example of how things changed is Devilman. Sure the modern version is violent, demons get ripped into pieces and explode in blood pinatas. But it's different from the OVAs or the manga even. The designs are abstract and cartoonish, the blood is yellow and the violence feels less real.

It's one reason games like House Of The Dead and even Resident Evil were toned down a fuck ton in comparison to their 1990s counterparts.

I had a coworker who tried to tell me they liked Naruto or Bleach or some shit, I don't remember, it was one of them, anyways they tell me they like it because it was violent. So I loaned them a copy of Apocalypse Zero and Angel Cop.

Mecha, scifi seinen/mystery and maybe one grimdark violent thing in half a decade. But of course, most everyone won't contribute to the sales etc on this board. Grimdark rose as a genre in the west like a few years back in SFF (especially fantasy) but kinda died off. And I feel like grimdark died off in animu too in general and was replaced by moeshit. It's niche.
