It's not like Xebec owns the IP, they were just the ones hired to make the latest season. Like how Gonzo did S1, and KyoAni did Fumoffu and Second Raid. There's no reason the IP owners can't just find a different studio to handle the next season, if they wanted to.

That said series was known and liked for mixing in a lot of humor everywhere not only in FUMOFFU.
This one went full drama and while it had it's moments the humor was sorely missing.
Also the production values were kind of wonky.
